City of Saint John and the Board of Police Commissioners of the City of Saint John statement on CUPE Local 486 negotiations

The City of Saint John wishes to issue the following statement concerning the negotiations with CUPE Local 486 on a new collective agreement for the City’s inside workers:

The City of Saint John is committed to reaching an agreement with CUPE Local 486 that reflects our commitment to financial sustainability and enables us to continue working together to deliver quality services to the people of Saint John.

We have a fair and reasonable offer on the table, and we believe it is in the best interests of everyone to finalize an agreement.

We are optimistic an agreement can be reached, but we are also taking prudent steps to have contingency plans ready to minimize the disruption to public services should a labour disruption occur.

The City of Saint John and the Board of Police Commissioners of the City of Saint John, as the employers, are negotiating with CUPE Local 486 on new collective agreements for our inside workers. Since negotiations began in June 2022, the City has met with the union a total of 26 times, including twice in July 2023 with a conciliator appointed by the province.
