Victims and Survivors of Crime Week

The Saint John Police raises awareness of victim and survivor issues during this year’s Victims and Survivors of Crime Week held May 15-21, 2022.

The month of May is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Therefore, our focus this year will be on supporting survivors of sexual violence. In Canada, one in three women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime. Young people ages 15-24 experience the highest rates of sexual assaults. In addition, of the 460,000 sexual assaults that occur in Canada, only approximately five percent are reported to the police (GNB, 2018).

Keeping with the spirit of this year’s theme “The Power of Collaboration” the Saint John Police, the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force, and the Saint John Police Association are organizing a Women’s Empowerment Seminar to be held on May 23, 2022, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. It is now open to women of all ages. During the first half of the seminar, speakers with lived experiences will share their stories with the group. The second half will feature self defence training. Lunch will be provided and seating is limited.
