Police Requirements and Process

Interested in possible career opportunities with the Saint John Police Force? Following are the requirements and the process required in order to become a police officer in Saint John.

Careers with the Saint John Police Force: Requirements 

The minimum requirements to become a Sworn Police Officer, as outlined in the New Brunswick Police Act:

  • Minimum 19 years of age
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • One of the following three options
    • Graduate of the Atlantic Police Academy Police Science Program
    • Graduate of a comparable training course offered at a police training institute approved by the Minister of Public Safety (New Brunswick Police Commission)
    • Have served a minimum of three years of satisfactory full-time service as a member of any police force in Canada
  • Not having been convicted of an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act or Food & Drug Act for which you have not received a pardon.
  • Be of good character and habits
  • Possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license
  • Must be medically fit to police force standards
  • Must be able to pass the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) test to police standards

In addition to the Atlantic Police Academy located in Summerside, PEI, graduates of the following Police Training Academies are currently recognized under the provisions of the NB Police Act:

  • Justice Institute of British Columbia, New Westminister, BC
  • RCMP Training Academy, Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Canadian Armed Forces Military Police Training, Technical
  • Qualification 3, CFB Borden, Ontario
  • L’Ecole nationale de police du Quebec, Trois Rivieres, Quebec
  • Canadian Police College
  • Ontario Police College

NOTE: Community college and other college courses that include studies in law and security administration do not meet the level of training as defined under the NB Police Act

Recruitment process

A.    Receipt of resume and letter of application

B.    Invitation to participate in recruitment process

C.    Six-step recruitment process for selected participants:

  • Application package submitted
  • Medical assessment
  • Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) fitness testing
  • Background investigation
  • Psychological assessment
  • Two-stage interview process

Failure to pass the medical or physical testing will result in the applicant being excluded from the recruitment process. All applicants must be security cleared.
