Camp Courage invites community to attend live rescue simulation

Camp Courage, an interactive training camp that gives young women and gender-diverse youth a look into careers in first response, is inviting the community to attend its final training exercise, a hands-on live rescue simulation at the Saint John Exhibition Park on August 31, 2023.

Eleven female and gender-diverse youth aged 15-19 from across Canada will be in Saint John from August 28-31 to participate in the first ever New Brunswick Camp Courage. The four-day camp will see participants take part in interactive training and skills related to emergency service careers such as Paramedic, Police Officer, and Firefighter.

The camp concludes with a final exercise where participants will put what they’ve learned to use by taking on various First Responder roles to respond to a simulated impaired driver scenario and multi-vehicle accident.

The event will take place next to the main building at the Exhibition Park grounds on Thursday, August 31 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Opening remarks will be delivered by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Camp Courage. The rescue exercise will be narrated for attendees and a brief closing ceremony for camp participants will be hosted by Saint John Fire, Saint John Police, and Ambulance NB.

Camp Courage was established in 2006 in Nova Scotia and has since expended to a Calgary and Indigenous camp chapters. A partnership between Saint John Fire, Saint John Police and Ambulance NB was able to bring Camp Courage to New Brunswick for the first time. In addition to providing a glimpse into careers in First Response, the camp aims to provide information, inspiration, education, and empowerment, leaving youth with the confidence to achieve any goal, career, or dream they desire.
