City of Saint John unveils new electric bikes to promote active transportation and environmental sustainability

The City of Saint John is excited to announce the introduction of two new electric bikes to its regular vehicle fleet, a significant step towards achieving the City’s priorities of active transportation and environmental sustainability.

To operate these state-of-the-art e-bikes, which comply with federal requirements, City staff must complete rider safety and operational training. Additionally, every rider is required to wear essential safety gear, including a properly fitted helmet and reflective clothing for enhanced visibility.

They represent a cost-effective alternative to traditional fleet vehicles, being approximately one tenth of the cost and eliminating gas expenses. Additionally, the e-bikes boast lower maintenance costs, making them an economical choice for the City.

Primarily, the e-bikes will be used by City building inspectors. These smaller, more environmentally friendly vehicles are ideal for navigating the busy uptown streets, offering zero emissions and reduced noise pollution. The e-bikes are expected to enhance the efficiency of inspections by minimizing time spent on parking and maneuvering through traffic.

City staff are enthusiastic about contributing to environmental conservation and are looking forward to the health benefits associated with using the e-bikes.
