Saint John launches second round of the Affordable Housing Grant Program

The City of Saint John has opened applications for the second round of the Affordable Housing Grant Program. The second round of 2024 Applications will be accepted from October 15, 2024, until November 15, 2024. 

Through the first round of the program held earlier this year, the City conditionally approved eight projects through grants valued at over $1million to help fund a total of 133 new affordable or supported units across the city.  

The program will provide $10,000 per affordable unit for eligible non-profit housing providers up to a maximum of $200,000 and $8,000 per affordable unit for eligible private sector developers up to a maximum of $160,000. Each project can receive up to an additional $50,000 in bonus funds for projects that are innovative or address a market gap up to the respective maximum amount. 

Applicants must provide proof of provincial/federal government support for their project.  

Successful applicants will have up to 1 year to obtain a building permit. All grants will be paid out upon completion of the project’s foundation, subject to terms and conditions of the grant agreement.  

Successful applicants must complete their project prior to April 2027.    

Applications for the Affordable Housing Grant Program are available through the City’s website from October 15 to November 15, 2024. The Grant Committee will begin reviewing applications in November/December. Funding will be committed through quarterly grant cycles until all the budget for 2024 is expended.
