Saint John makes improvements to Affordable Housing Grant Program

2024 Applications will be accepted from July 15, 2024, to August 15, 2024

At its meeting on July 8, 2024, Saint John Council approved amendments to the Affordable Housing Grant Program aimed at increasing the number of affordable housing units in Saint John. This grant program is a Housing Accelerator Fund project, funded by the Government of Canada.

The 2024-2026 program changes include allowing for earlier disbursement of grant funding upon pouring of foundation, as well as improvements to the Grant Committee project evaluation to allow scorecard to encompass other factors such as the developer’s experience, track record, construction timeline, and depth of affordability.

The program will provide $10,000 per affordable unit for eligible non-profit housing providers up to a maximum of $200,000 and $8,000 per affordable unit for eligible private sector developers up to a maximum of $160,000. Each project can receive up to an additional $50,000 in bonus funds for projects that are innovative or address a market gap.

Applications for the Affordable Housing Grant Program are available through the City’s website from July 15th to August 15, 2024. The Grant Committee will begin reviewing applications in September. Funding will be committed through quarterly grant cycles until all the $800,000 budget for 2024 is expended.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact the City to determine eligibility of their project. Further information about the Grant Program and Affordable Housing Action Plan can be found on the City’s website or by contacting affordable@saintjohn.ca.
