Have a large, bulky item that needs to be disposed of? If you’re a residential collection customer, you can arrange to have it picked up by the city at no cost. A bulky item means large household items such as furniture, mattresses, bed springs, boxes, barrels, pieces of fencing, barbecues, carpets, etc.
Bulky items do not include electronics, household hazardous waste, or large household appliances* such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, washers, and dryers. A single family residence is allowed up to 3 bulky items per pickup, two times per year.
Property owners with 2-4 units are allowed up to 6 bulky items per pickup, twice per year.
You must preregister each item for this service by calling 658-4455 between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Customer Service Staff will call you back with an assigned pick up date. Be sure your items are curbside on that date by 7:00 a.m.
Many communities and local organizations throughout Saint John like to host events during the warmer months to clean and beautify their neighbourhoods. The Green Machine is 14-foot trailer that contains all the equipment and supplies needed to support such clean-up initiatives in our community. And it’s available to clean-up crews free of charge. With the help of the Green Machine, residents are more easily able to take ownership of their parks and public spaces, which increases their appreciation for the natural green spaces, and fosters a sense of community pride.
The Green Machine is available each spring from May 1 - June 30, 2024. Online reservation applications open April 2, 2024.
- Available daily for one event only between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Requests to reserve the Green Machine for an event outside of these regular hours will be considered on a case-by-case basis as staff resources allow.)
- Please include event set-up and tear-down times in your reservation request.
- Three weeks notice is required for reservations.
- An automated response will recognize receipt of your reservation request. However, the reservation is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation from Community Services staff.
- Garbage collection is available after the clean up for non-profits or events held on municipal land. Maximum 10 garbage bags.
- The Green Machine is not for personal use.
Approximately 370 illegal dump sites are reported to the city annually—about one illegal dump per day. This must stop. Illegal dumping is a significant problem for Saint John, and it affects of all of us. Not only are illegal dumps an eyesore in our community, but cleaning them up costs taxpayers upwards of $70,000 per year. It’s why illegal dumping is an offence that comes with heavy penalties. Fines range from $500 to $20,500 for individuals, and from $1,000 to $1 million for companies.

The City of Saint John must produce an annual budget in order to set property tax rates and water rates. The annual budgets must be balanced with no projected deficit. The City of Saint John maintains a General Operating Budget, Utility Fund Operating Budget and General Fund and Utility Fund Capital Budgets. The Operating Budget funds municipal services such as road maintenance, parks, emergency services (police and fire), and garbage collection, and many other services.
Saint John Water budget based on a user pay system. Rate payers are charged based on the Utility’s cost of providing services to each class of rate payers. Saint John Water currently has two classes of customers which are Potable Water Customers who receive treated drinkable water along with sewerage services and Industrial Customers who receive raw water only.
The City and Utility Fund Capital Budget goes toward maintaining and rehabilitating existing infrastructure, as well as investing in new development that will benefit residents and businesses for years to come and contribute to Saint John’s economy and quality of life.
M-2: A BY-LAW FOR THE STORAGE, COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF SOLID WASTE IN THE CITY OF SAINT JOHN
Once the gifts are opened and the parties are over, it’s time for the Christmas tree to move on. To help you, the City will once again be offering its free and convenient annual Christmas tree drop-off program in the new year. Please ensure all decorations have been removed from your tree prior to dropping it off. All sites will be open from January 1 to January 12, 2024.

*South/Central Peninsula residents are advised that the specific drop-off site commonly referred to as the “Old Sugar Refinery” is located at the very end of Charlotte Street and Vulcan Street. Trees are not to be deposited at the Bulk Terminal Truck Entrance or any other location on Port Saint John property.
Look for the designated area at each location. Sites will be plowed and maintained for the safety of the public and workers.
If you are unable to drop off your Christmas tree to a designated site, you can:
- Remove all decorations and trim
- Delimb the tree and cut up the trunk and branches into manageable blocks (must be no longer than four feet and must be smaller than the diameter of two inches)
- Place blocks and branches in your compost cart for removal on your regular garbage and compost collection day.
