June 1, 2023: With the unfortunate wildfire events currently being experienced in New Brunswick, and beyond our borders as well, the City of Saint John would like to provide the following update regarding outside burning restrictions within the city.

Given the current risk environment, the City has made the decision that it is vitally important that our residents (including campground operators) follow the guidance and restrictions provided by the Province of New Brunswick and that outside burning within the boundaries of the City of Saint John is strictly prohibited.

Typically, municipalities throughout the province are permitted to create their own burning parameters and regulations at any given time. Over the last several years, the City of Saint John has established and followed its own outside burning practice direction.

The current fire hazard is high, and the entire province is under a no burn advisory. Sources like backyard fire pits, fireworks, cigarette ends, unattended barbecues and burning debris in your yard are all risks and are prohibited at this time. The use of propane BBQs and other certified heating devices (outside) is still allowed.

The City will advise residents when these restrictions are lifted, and outside burning is once again permitted.
