City of Saint John pleased with federal government announcement to further support infrastructure priorities of Canadian municipalities

The City of Saint John would like to acknowledge and thank the Government of Canada for their investment to support infrastructure priorities of Canadian municipalities following yesterday’s announcement regarding the increased allocation of funds from the Canada Community-Building Fund.

The federal government has proposed a one-time investment of $2.2 billion that would help address infrastructure priorities in municipalities and First Nations communities. The funds would flow through the federal Gas Tax Fund, a long-term, indexed source of funding for over 3,600 communities across the country.

This would double the federal government’s regular funding for municipalities in 2020-21 and provide much needed funding to help reduce the risk of infrastructure projects being delayed or cancelled due to the pandemic.

Based on the announcement, the City of Saint John could receive an additional $4.6 million to support capital projects aligned with our strategic growth and asset management plans. Investments of this magnitude go a long way to support the City as a growing community of choice for people to live work, invest and play.

All funds received by the City will be earmarked for capital projects and recommendations based on the capital budget policy and the community’s needs will be discussed in open sessions of Finance Committee and Common Council meetings in the coming months.
