Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame welcomes five inductees

One team and four individual athletes will enter the Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame this year.

The 1961 Saint John YMCA Flyers, Barry Britt, Randy Jones, Kaylee Kilpatrick and John (Tip) O’Neill will be inducted at a ceremony to be held Saturday, October 26 at Lily Lake Pavilion.

The Flyers were a highly-decorated basketball team, capturing the provincial, regional and national senior men’s championships in the early 1960s. They found a home at the Saint John YMCA and developed their talents into a championship team.

Barry Britt, who grew up in Hampton, was an accomplished cross-country runner and track and field star. He represented his country and province at the 2017 World Francophone Games. He won 10 medals at various Canadian championships.

Randy Jones played eight seasons in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets. He was an undrafted underdog who worked tirelessly to fulfill his dream of a professional hockey career.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire, Kaylee Kilpatrick played professional basketball in Ireland, Australia and Germany. She played for Team Canada at the Youth Olympics in Singapore. She also competed with Team New Brunswick at the Canada Summer Games.

Tip O’Neill was born in Saint John on January 22, 1880. He was a member of the 1906 World Series-champion Chicago White Sox, becoming the first Canadian to win baseball’s ultimate prize. He also spent time in the major leagues with the Boston Americans and Washington Senators.

“Our sporting history is rich and deserves to be celebrated,” said Aaron Kennedy, chair of the Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame Committee. “The Flyers, Barry, Randy, Kaylee and Tip make for an exceptional Class of 2024.”

The Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame is located in the lobby of TD Station.

Information on tickets for this year’s ceremony will be released at a later date.
