Mayor Reardon all smiles as province announces funding for new school in Saint John

The City of Saint John is thrilled to learn that part of the provincial government’s $84.7 million investment to support its aim to build a world-class education system in public schools will include the much-anticipated new school in Saint John’s central peninsula.

“Our future is taking shape,” says Mayor Donna Reardon with excitement. “As a City, Saint John is positioned for growth, and as a community, we are ready to move through the concept stage for the new school, to its actual construction. Planning for this school has been underway for the past two years, and we welcome the investment from the province with ready and open arms.”

There are still many details to work through, including design and the construction timeline.  We look forward to working with the province and the community to drive this project to completion as soon as possible.

In 2017, a Central Peninsula Community School Task Force was formed to represent the needs of the community, the City of Saint John, and the school district, and to help build support for the project within the community.

Following extensive public engagement for the concept, design and vision for the new school, Heather Chase, a member of the Task Force, said that the K-8 school will help establish the central peninsula as a vibrant, mixed-income neighbourhood.

“The design is driven by student needs and educators’ goals,” said Chase in a release. “The school will be a magnet for families. A first-of-its-kind in our province, the new school will offer learning environments that encourage contemporary, collaborative thinking within the school and extend to embrace and transform the entire neighbourhood. It’s a giant leap forward that will reset Saint John as a leader and economic driver for our province. This isn’t just a school – it’s so much more.”
