Notice of temporary closure of a section of Saint Patrick Street Pedway beginning April 10

The City of Saint John is advising the public that a section of the Saint Patrick Street Pedway will be temporarily closed for redevelopment beginning Wednesday, April 10 and is expected to reopen at the end of October 2024. The closure includes the escalators and elevator that connect Market Square to Brunswick Square. The remainder of the pedway will remain open.

During this improvement project, the two aging escalators will be removed and replaced by new wide stairs and an additional elevator will be installed. These necessary upgrades will result in a significant reduction in annual energy and maintenance costs and are required to provide an improved level of service to the community. Once complete, the new stairs and second elevator will allow for reliable and fast access to Brunswick Square, City Hall, Market Square and the Canada Games Aquatic Centre through the Pedway system.

The current escalators and elevator are original to the building and were installed in 1983, as part of the construction of the Saint Patrick Street Pedway system. Over the past number of years, the two escalators have been out of service frequently for repairs due to mechanical failures and/or safety issues. The repairs have resulted in higher maintenance costs and inconvenience to the public and tenants.

Businesses and services within the pedway system will remain open during construction and we encourage the public to continue to visit.

Access will remain open from City Hall to the Canada Games Aquatic Centre and wayfinding signage will be in place to assist in directing pedestrian traffic.

The Saint Patrick Street parking lot has been closed for the required exterior work for the duration of the project. Updates will be provided as the project progresses.
