Statement from the Mayor: Message of Condolence

It is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the recent encampment fire tragedy, which resulted in the untimely loss of two members of our community. At this moment, more than anything, my thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the friends and families who are mourning. Please know that the entire community of Saint John stands with you during this incredibly difficult time.

I also wish to acknowledge the remarkable first responders who were present at the scene. Your dedication and compassion in such challenging circumstances do not go unnoticed, and I am profoundly thankful for your service.

This heartbreaking tragedy highlights the pressing issue of homelessness in our community. It is a stark reminder that we must come together to find lasting solutions so that no one in Saint John has to endure homelessness.

I understand that many of you are feeling frustrated and saddened by the pace of change and the impact this crisis is having on our community. Please know that your feelings are completely justified, and I am committed to listening and incorporating your voices into our collective efforts to make a difference.

Together with our frontline agencies and partners, we are dedicated to tackling the housing crisis head-on. Our mission is clear: to ensure that every individual in Saint John has access to safe and affordable housing. Through continued collaboration, I am confident we can address this challenge effectively.

My thoughts are with every single one of you as we navigate these trying times together.
