Stay Off the Tracks: City of Saint John Reminds Drivers to Think Before Crossing

The City of Saint John is reminding drivers to stay alert at railway crossings and to never stop on the tracks.

With about 30 public rail crossings across the city, it’s something many drivers encounter every day, but a simple mistake, like moving onto the tracks when traffic is backed up, can quickly turn dangerous.

Across Canada, railway safety remains a concern. Crossing accidents have increased by around 20% since 2020–2021, and trespassing incidents are also on the rise, with more than 90 reported each year recently. Most of those incidents lead to serious injury or worse.

Drivers are being asked to keep a few key things in mind:

  • Don’t stop on the tracks. Ever. If traffic is backed up, wait before the crossing.
  • Only cross if you can clear. No space on the other side? Don’t go.
  • Don’t get boxed in. Make sure your entire vehicle can fit safely beyond the tracks.
  • Think before you follow. Just because the car ahead went doesn’t mean it’s safe for you.
  • Remember, trains can’t stop quickly. They can take kilometres to come to a full stop.

Rail crossings in Saint John vary, some have lights and gates, others are more basic, but the same rules apply at every crossing.

Always taking the time to check before crossing can make all the difference.
