City reminds residents of back to school road safety

With the start of the school year next week, the City of Saint John is reminding residents to take extra safety precautions around school zones and school buses as part of our Travel with Heart road safety education campaign.

School zones are active, and children are often unpredictable when crossing streets or getting on and off buses. Speed limits in all designated school zones are 30 KM/H during school hours starting the first day of school. Please slow down and stay alert when driving through school zones.

Pay close attention to crossing guards, school buses, and students walking or biking to and from school. Students are recommended to wear light coloured or reflective clothing, walk in groups, and plan out the safest route to walk to school. When crossing the street at a crosswalk, extend an arm, then wait for cars in both directions to stop before starting to cross.

It is illegal and dangerous to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing­­­ - stop and wait until the lights stop flashing and the bus moves on.
