Saint John celebrates completion of Lancaster WWTF Aeration System Renewal Project

This major upgrade has turned one of the city’s oldest wastewater treatment facilities into a modern, and efficient treatment facility providing service to the west side.

Thanks to the support of the Federal and Provincial governments, and the hard work of City staff and contractors, the Lancaster WWTF Aeration System Renewal Project is officially complete. The project included removal of the existing aeration system, dredging of the aeration cells, and installation of a new floating lateral fine bubble diffuser system.

For more than 30 years, the previous aeration system was in operation without any major operational issues, but deficiencies began to arise with the underground infrastructure. The new fine bubble diffuser system provides a highly efficient transfer of oxygen into the wastewater, and a reduction in energy requirements. The new systems floating laterals also provides ease of access for future operations and maintenance of the system.

This project is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it’s an investment in Saint John’s future. By improving treatment capacity, and efficiency, we’re supporting community growth and extending the service life of the facility, accommodating residents in their everyday lives.

This $7.1 million achievement would not have been possible without the collaboration all levels of government. Thank you to the Provincial Government who provided $1.3 million and the Federal Government who contributed $1.5 million towards the project.

The City extends a big thank you to residents for their patience during construction and is excited to highlight Saint John Water’s commitment to servicing the community.
