Saint John celebrates completion of Retail Drive Intersection Realignment Project

The City of Saint John is excited to announce that the Retail Drive Intersection Realignment Project is officially complete. This transformative upgrade has turned one of the city’s most challenging intersections into a modern, efficient, and safe gateway to one of our busiest commercial hubs.

Thanks to the support of the Federal and Provincial governments, and the hard work of City staff and contractors, drivers can now enjoy a smooth, streamlined connection between Retail Drive and Ashburn Lake Road. The project included reconstructing Ashburn Lake Road, installing new underground services, and new traffic signals to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently.

“The benefits of this project are substantial. The new intersection provides safer and more efficient access to major retailers, restaurants, and small businesses,” said Mayor Donna Reardon. “It will reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and support continued economic growth in one of our city’s most important commercial areas. This is an investment in safety, infrastructure, and prosperity for Saint John.”

For years, the old intersection was a source of frustration for drivers navigating quick lane changes and tricky turns near the train tracks. The new design makes travel easier, safer, and more predictable, whether you’re heading to East Point Shopping Centre, grabbing a bite at a local restaurant, or visiting one of the many businesses in the area.

This project is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it’s an investment in Saint John’s future. By improving access and safety, we’re supporting growth and making our city an even better place to live, work, and shop.

This $8.3 million achievement would not have been possible without the collaboration and commitment of many. To the Province who provided $2.3 million and the Federal Government who contributed $2.8 million towards the project, thank you for your investment in Saint John’s future.

The City extends a big thank you to residents and businesses for their patience during construction. Together, we’ve built something that will benefit our community, motorists and pedestrians for decades to come.
