Watershed Wildfire Prevention PSA Launch

Saint John Water raises awareness on protecting the Loch Lomond Watershed from wildfires

The Loch Lomond Watershed's Forest plays a vital role in protecting the lakes that serve as the primary source of drinking water for Saint John. It is imperative to safeguard the forest surrounding the Watershed. By taking steps to protect your home and property from wildfires, you also contribute to the protection of this essential resource.

Saint John Water urges residents to follow these tips to help protect their homes and the forest:

  • Remove dead dry trees: These trees can act as fuel for wildfires.
  • Check the NB Forest Fire Watch before burning any materials.
  • Burn yard waste in winter or wet weather to minimize the risk of floating embers starting fires elsewhere on your property.
  • Exercise caution with open fires during dry or windy conditions.
  • Use metal screens over firepits to catch embers.
  • Douse firepits or campfires thoroughly before retiring for the night.
  • Mow tall dry grass around or near your home to prevent the spread of fires.
  • Plant green leafy hardwoods around your property, as they are more fire-resistant than softwood evergreen species.
  • Carry a fire extinguisher when using recreational vehicles and ATVs, as vehicle fires can lead to forest fires.
  • Plan fireworks displays carefully: Check wind direction, aim away from your home and the woods, and soak discharged or misfired fireworks in water before disposal.
  • Be FireSmart: Create a safe zone around your home, shed, garage, or barn.

Saint John Water is actively replanting high-risk sections of the forest to enhance fire resistance.
