Traffic Advisory: Main Street

The City of Saint John is excited to be transforming Main Street and the Viaduct—one of our most vital transportation corridors—into a safer, greener, and more inclusive route for all. This major road reconstruction project, which began in May 2025, is expected to be completed by September 2025.

This significant investment will enhance connections between the South Central Peninsula, the Old North End, and surrounding areas. With a focus on accessibility and sustainable mobility, the improvements will better support walking, cycling, and public transit, while continuing to accommodate vehicle traffic.

As part of the Main Street Active Transportation Project, infrastructure installation and upgrades will require a temporary traffic interruption beginning May 19, 2025. The Station Street on-ramp and off-ramp to Main Street will be closed for approximately 7 weeks.

We kindly ask motorists to follow posted detour signage and consider alternate routes when possible. Alternative routes between the South Central Peninsula and the North End include the Somerset Street and Crown Street overpasses. Road and sidewalk directional signage will be in place to guide everyone safely through the area.

The City of Saint John sincerely thanks residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience and cooperation as we work together to build a better, more connected city.
