Traffic Advisory: Main Street Viaduct

As part of the Main Street Active Transportation Project, the City of Saint John is advising residents of construction on the Route 1 on-ramp and off-ramp to the Main Street Viaduct which began June 24, 2025. The ramps will remain open during construction; however; the lanes will be narrowed for approximately six weeks.

We kindly ask motorists to proceed with caution as there will be active construction work in the area, follow posted detour signage and consider alternate routes when possible. It is recommended that motorists use alternative routes to Route 1 such as Garden Street/Paradise Row and Crown Street/ the One Mile Interchange, when possible. Road and sidewalk directional signage will be in place to guide everyone safely through the area.

Access to Main Street from Station Street, Paradise Row and Portland Street will be restored by the end of the week.

The City of Saint John sincerely thanks residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience and cooperation as we work together to build a better, more connected city.

The Main Street Active Transportation project is a significant investment that will enhance connections between the South-Central Peninsula, the Old North End, and surrounding areas. With a focus on accessibility and sustainable mobility, the improvements will better support walking, cycling, and public transit, while continuing to accommodate vehicle traffic.
