Tree Planting Projects Underway Across the City of Saint John

Residents may notice City crews working in neighbourhoods, parks, and other public spaces across Saint John. This work is part of two major tree‑planting initiatives that will add more than 1,500 new trees to the city over the next several years.

All trees are being planted on City property, including parks, boulevards, and the City right‑of‑way. Before planting begins, City crews complete underground locates. These temporary paint markings identify utilities and ensure each planting site is safe and appropriate.

Announced in March 2025, the Natural Infrastructure Fund (NIF) is supporting Saint John in planting more than 1,100 trees over a three‑year period. The NIF backs natural and hybrid solutions that strengthen climate resilience, lower carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, and enhance Canadians’ access to nature.

An additional 454 trees will be planted this season through the Green Municipal Fund’s Growing Canada’s Community Canopies (GCCC) initiative. GCCC helps communities plant the right trees in the right places, supporting long‑term environmental health, biodiversity, and greener neighbourhoods.

Why This Work Matters

Together, these projects will:

• Strengthen Saint John’s resilience to climate change

• Expand the urban tree canopy over multiple years

• Improve stormwater absorption and reduce heat impacts

• Support wildlife and biodiversity

• Enhance neighbourhood green spaces across the city

The City appreciates residents’ patience and curiosity as this work continues. Updates will be shared throughout the planting season.
