The arena season operates this year from October 10, 2025 to March 31, 2026, the City of Saint John offers free public skating at all three of our indoor rinks. The Public Skating schedule is located on the right-hand side of the page, under the Related Documents section.

If you’re looking for somewhere to skate in Saint John, whether for hockey or recreational skating, you’re in luck. Not only does your city have the facilities you need (three municipal arenas and one outdoor rink), but all public skating in Saint John is completely free! In addition to public skating, our arenas also offer free scheduled ice time for preschoolers and seniors.

Outdoor skating is available at Lily Lake in Rockwood Park as weather and conditions permit, from dawn until 10 p.m.

Of all the things you can do in Saint John during the winter, the one thing you can forget about is hibernating! Your city has everything you need to get out and be active in the snow.

In Rockwood Park you’ll find groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Rental equipment is available from Inside Out Adventures, located on the bottom level of the Lily Lake Pavilion.

Many other local parks and trails, while not maintained during winter, remain accessible to outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy blazing their own trails.

If you or the family are hoping to leap into the water for either a fun, casual swim or lap swimming, there’s something you need to know—our swimming options are the envy of the country. First of all, the Bay of Fundy—need we say more? Also, two beautiful rivers, tons of placid lakes at our doorstep, and a world-class indoor facility. Our summers may not be very long, but they're spectacular!

The beautiful beaches you can swim at in Saint John include:

Dominion Park — West Saint John (Lifeguards on duty in summer months 10:45 a.m. – 5:45 p.m.)

Lily Lake/Fisher Lakes — Rockwood Park, Saint John City Center  (Lifeguards on duty in summer months 11:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

For indoor swimming, the Canada Games Aquatic Centre is located in the heart of Uptown Saint John and offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool, diving boards, water slides, and much more.

Anyone can spend time learning to ollie in any driveway or park. But to really learn what your board can do—and have a ton of fun—you kind of need the obstacles of a proper skate park. And that’s exactly what skaters in Saint John have. Just remember—helmets are required by law in New Brunswick.

Saint John’s biggest and most challenging skate park is Station 1 on Station Street next to TD Station. It's perfect for all skill levels and ages, with ramps, bowls, pipes, and rails. The annual Mayor’s Cup Skateboard Competition is held here on Canada Day.

A smaller skate park is located at Market Place District Park on the City’s west side. It's ideal for more novice skateboarders.

Quality sport and recreation facilities go hand-in-hand with healthy individuals and communities. Saint John prides itself on its variety of sport and recreation venues. From City-owned arenas to multipurpose facilities like TD Station and the Irving Oil Field House, there are many options available for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities to stay active.

Located in the heart of Uptown Saint John, the Canada Games Aquatic Centre offers the City's only full-service fitness experience in aquatics, fitness, and wellness therapy. This impressive and modern facility is home to an Olympic-size, 50m eight-lane pool and diving complex, water slides, two warm water leisure pools, a tots pool, hot tubs, sauna, and steam room, plus multiple fitness facilities with machines, free weights, cardio machines, pull-up rigging and more. 

The Centre offers public swimming, swimming lessons, swim camps, leadership courses, and aquatic sports. The fitness facility offers a variety of fitness class options, from HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to Zumba, and also personal training.

TD Station is a multi-purpose entertainment, sports, and convention/trade show facility. It’s conveniently located in Saint John’s uptown core, and is recognized as one of Eastern Canada’s most popular and successful venues. Home to the QMJHL team and the Saint John Sea Dogs, TD Station can accommodate up to 8,000 people.

TD Station is a popular venue for concerts, hockey, trade shows and more.

Located on the UNB Saint John campus, the Canada Games Stadium—built for the 1985 Canada Summer Games—is the city’s premier track and field facility. It features a 400m synthetic rubberized track surface, and separate areas for long jump/triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, hammer, shot put, and javelin. Inside the track is a synthetic turf soccer/football field.

The Irving Oil Field House is a 110,000 sq. ft. indoor track, turf, and fitness facility. It features two indoor turf fields, a 200 metre track, and a fully-outfitted fitness centre. 

The Field House offers sports and recreation programs and clubs, along with trainer-led group fitness classes in HIIT (high-intensity interval training), boot camp, yoga, and much more. It also serves as a community centre for locals, with childcare, after-school programming, and newcomer services. 

The City of Saint John donated $3 million toward the construction of the building and also funds a free evening recreational program as part of the community centre.

The Charles Gorman Arena is a year-round facility for ice hockey, ball hockey, box lacrosse, and special events.  It offers heated seating, and a convenient canteen for snacks. It is located in Millidgeville near the Saint John Regional Hospital and UNBSJ campus.

The Peter Murray Arena is a year-round facility for ice hockey, ball hockey, box lacrosse, and special events. It is part of an outdoor sport venue and sits next to Memorial baseball and softball fields. Tennis and basketball courts are at the rear of the building and face St. Rose and Barnhill school ballfields. It is located in West Saint John.

The Lord Beaverbrook Rink is a year-round facility for ice hockey, ball hockey, box lacrosse, and special events. Besides the ice surface, it features an indoor 200m walking track. The walking track and public skating are free to the public. 

The rink has seating for upwards of 2,000 people, and is centrally located on Main Street in the City’s North End.

The Stewart Hurley Arena is a year-round facility for ice hockey, ball hockey, box lacrosse, and special events.  It offers heated seating, and a convenient canteen for snacks. It is conveniently located next to Simonds High School on the City’s East Side.

Saint John strives to be a city for everyone. Through the Growth and Community Development Service, the City supports two key committees – The Saint John Ability Advisory Committee and the Seniors Advisory Committee.

The Ability Advisory Committee is an advisory group supported by City of Saint John. This committee that provides leadership in making our community more inclusive.

Using our diverse expertise we partner with people with disabilities, government, business and the public to remove barriers by providing information and advocacy regarding disability issues. 

The Seniors Advisory Committee help to engage seniors in many wellness activities by having access to information and activity-based events.  

This leadership encourages and facilitates dialogue throughout the community. The committee is comprised of a cross-section of individual seniors, representatives of senior’s groups, a city liaison, and relevant agencies.  As one of the fast growing demographics in Saint John, it is important to maintain and increase seniors' quality of life by offering social participation which is demonstrated to improve mental and physical health.

Participating in sport, recreation and cultural activities can come with costs. For some, these costs mean barriers that would prevent them from participating in activities that support our wellbeing and quality of life. That’s why the City of Saint John provides financial assistance to ensure every citizen can participate.

The City partially funds the costs associated with the use of sport facilities such as arenas, ball fields and tennis courts through its annual operating budget. Citizen tax dollars subsidize the costs in order to keep user fees lower.  The City also provides operating funds to various service providers such as community centres and offers grants to others who provide recreation, sport and community services.

For low-income families who require additional financial support, P.R.O. Kids, a charitable program operated by the City of Saint John, that pays the registration fees, equipment costs, and transportation costs related to organized, registered recreation.

Nothing is more fundamental to life than water. Saint John Water takes pride in delivering award-winning drinking water that exceeds Canadian drinking water quality guidelines and we put an equal amount of effort into assuring that all our city's wastewater is collected and fully treated prior to discharging it. We owe it to our residents, current and future—and it’s our responsibility as good global citizens—to protect and conserve the environment we all value and call home.

The first public water system in Canada, now known as Saint John Water was established in 1837. It is owned by the City of Saint John, funded by system users, and governed by Common Council. 

Saint John Water provides:

• Drinking (potable) water
• Wastewater (sewerage) treatment
• Industrial raw water
• Infrastructure management

Saint John Water provides service to 16,000 residential customers and 3,100 commercial and non-residential customers.

In 2025 the Saint John Water Long Term Financial Plan was created to guide the Utility’s financial and operating activities for the next ten years. It will ensure that Saint John Water operates as a “sustainable utility” – meaning it will meet the present and future economic, social needs of today’s ratepayers without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Every year Saint John Water produces a number of Annual Water Reports.

These reports contain a wealth of water quality information and operational data along with capital investment, employee training, and development information. Any resident and customer who wants a full snapshot of everything their water utility is doing, and how well, can find answers in these reports.

Saint John Water ensures the reliable and economical delivery of safe, clean drinking water to about 17,000 customers in Saint John. This includes managing the supply of water, water quality testing, water treatment, transmission and distribution, and billing. Our water meets the high level of quality required by Health Canada and the New Brunswick Departments of Health and Environment and Local Government. And we’re proud of the recognition we’ve received—including awards from the Atlantic Canada Water & Wastewater Association. We are regulated by the Clean Environment and Clean Water Acts. 

Clean water begins at the source 

The most economical way to maintain uncontaminated water is to keep the water clean to begin with. It’s why we operate by the "multi-barrier approach”, which reduces or prevents contaminants from entering the water system at every step in the process. We protect the watershed and aquifers by limiting activities in protected areas.   

Our Water Sources

South Bay Wellfield

Three large wells at this site collect water from aquifers deep below the ground's surface. It’s then pumped to the South Bay Treatment Facility where it's treated and sent through the distribution system to over 3,000 customers on the west side of the city. South Bay Wellfield began distribution in September 2017. 

Loch Lomond Drinking Water Treatment Facility

This state-of-the-art facility is supplied from the Loch Lomond and Latimer Lake watersheds. It has the capacity to produce 75 million litres of clean drinking water per day, and the three on-site storage reservoirs have a capacity of 33 million litres. This facility serves over 13,000 customers in the east, north, south, and select areas of the west side of the city. Distribution began in August 2018. Harbourview Well System

Saint John Water owns, operates, and maintains two well houses in the Red Head Area in East Saint  John. This groundwater system supplies chlorinated well water to about  450  residences in the Harbourview subdivision.

Water quality testing 

The health and safety of the public are Saint John Water’s primary goal and that’s why we test for more parameters and on a more frequent basis than is required by law.  We sample water right from the raw source water, through the treatment process, and at various locations throughout the distribution system. More water quality data can be found in our Drinking Water Annual Reports and the Water Quality Reports. 

Water treatment

Depending on the source, Saint John Water uses different treatment techniques. Groundwater aquifers are a great clean source of potable water, as mother nature has done all the treatment required. However, since these aquifers transmit water via a pipe network, sodium hypochlorite is used as a means of disinfection. Orthophosphate is also being used in the South Bay Wellfield treatment system to manage corrosion within the distribution system.

Water sourced from the Loch Lomond Watershed is pretreated at Latimer Lake Pretreatment facility followed by full modern water treatment including coagulation and flocculation, dissolved air flotation, filtration, and disinfection. Orthophosphate is also used to manage corrosion within the distribution system.

Billing and collections

About 80% of our customers pay a flat rate for their water and sewerage services. Council sets the rates in order to recover both the operating and capital costs of the utility. For more information, see Water Service Rates.

The City of Saint John operates and manages over 513.3 km of water transmission and distribution piping.  Transmission mains are the large-diameter pipes that move water from raw water sources to the treatment facilities, and also to small-diameter pipes that feed water to homes, businesses, and industrial customers. These pipes undergo an annual flushing program to maintain the best possible water quality. Also, Saint John Water undertakes several capital improvement projects every year to improve existing infrastructure and build new infrastructure like underground piping and facility upgrades.

Saint John Water provides quarterly water quality reports taken from measurements at various points throughout the water distribution system.

Water and Sewage Rates

The economic vitality of our community depends on industry, and industry depends on a reliable supply of water. The Industrial Water Service provides industry with raw water to carry out their processes. The service includes the supply of water, operation and maintenance of related infrastructure, and billing and collection based on the amount of water used.

Saint John Water manages two separate industrial raw water supplies. Loch Lomond and Latimer Lake Watershed supplies raw water to industrial users east of the Reversing Falls Bridge, and Spruce Lake Watershed supplies raw water to industrial users west of the Reversing Falls Bridge. Each raw industrial water system includes screening and distribution of raw, untreated water (non-potable). 

Separate Industrial water rates have been developed with each user. Each user’s individual raw water rate is calculated to fully recover the cost of operating the industrial system (including debt servicing) as well as annual contributions to asset replacement reserves (to fully fund the eventual replacement of existing assets) and a yearly contribution to a rate stabilization reserve. The cost recovery approach applied to calculate the user rates is consistent with the requirements of the Local Governance Act which requires water and sewer services to be balanced on an annual basis. Wastewater is the “used” water that goes down the drain when you flush your toilet, wash your dishes, take a bath, and wash your clothes. And this dirty water can’t just go straight back into the environment. Properly and fully treating the wastewater is critical for both public health and our natural environment. Wastewater treatment removes contaminants and prevents them from accumulating in the environment—which protects us, aquatic life, and wildlife.

Wastewater is collected from residential and commercial sources and transported to treatment plants through an extensive network of pipes and pumping stations. It travels to the wastewater treatment facility where objects such as sticks, rocks, sand, and gravel are removed. Micro-organisms are used to eat all the small bits of organic material. The wastewater is disinfected using ultraviolet radiation and the biosolids are used in commercial applications like soccer or baseball fields.

Treated wastewater meets the standards set out in the Approvals to Operate as issued by the Minister of Environment and Local Government.

How you can help

To help keep your environment clean and water treatment running efficiently, remember this: Don’t rush—think before you flush. Many items we use daily should never be flushed because they cause damage to home plumbing and our City’s wastewater infrastructure. Please keep your flushing and drainage to the basics: human waste and toilet paper. They’re the only things that break down during the treatment process, and they won’t cause blockages—which could result in basement flooding and sewer backups.
