City of Saint John recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day

The City of Saint John is joining all Canadians in recognizing June 21, 2022 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.  This day provides an opportunity for Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples to our community.

Coinciding with the summer solstice, June 21 has traditionally been a day that many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their rich culture and heritage.

To mark the occasion, the City of Saint John, along with the Department of Canadian Heritage, have commissioned Indigenous woodcarver and artist Chi Mokaman to create two significant pieces of art to acknowledge the past while celebrating future opportunities for shared growth in Saint John.

The first carving will honour the lives and contributions of Indigenous leaders from Saint John and surrounding areas. This piece will be unveiled to the community in the fall of 2022.

The second carving will recognize the painful history of Indigenous Canadians and celebrate the opportunities that lie ahead as we move forward as a community. This piece will be unveiled during a public ceremony in the spring of 2023.
