City of Saint John update on wildfire risk response

The safety of our residents, firefighters, and community is the City’s top priority. We appreciate the community for their attention to provincial and local advisories and urge everyone to stay vigilant under these extreme conditions.

Due to ongoing dry weather, the City has implemented proactive measures to reduce wildfire risk, including the temporary closure of park trails. These actions help minimize fire hazards and ensure emergency crews have optimal access in the event of a fire.

The Saint John Fire Department is fully prepared to respond to emergencies across our 326 square kilometres, including areas with limited access to fire hydrants. All Engine and Ladder Trucks are equipped with onboard water—some carrying over 1,000 gallons—and firefighting foam to support suppression efforts. These vehicles can draw water from hydrants and alternative sources to support firefighting efforts.

Our fleet of engines and ladder trucks is fully operational and ready for deployment. Both of our tanker trucks are in service and available to respond within Saint John and surrounding communities. While tankers are not staffed at all times, a rapid deployment model with on duty personnel is in place to ensure timely mobilization when needed. The City continues to evaluate operations to maintain the highest level of emergency service.

In addition, we also maintain Mutual Aid agreements with neighbouring municipalities to provide additional tanker support when required.

Fire Prevention is Key

Preventing fires before they start is our strongest defence. We ask all residents to:

  • Comply with fire bans and avoid any outdoor burning.
  • Avoid activities that may generate sparks or heat in wooded or grassy areas.
  • Immediately report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911.

The City will continue to provide regular updates on fire risks and public safety measures. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe.
