Saint John Community Arts Board unveils artist-in-residence project

The Saint John Community Arts Board has unveiled it’s Summer 2024 artist-in-residence community arts project. In the Summer of 2024, Artist-In-Residence, Sheryl Crowley, worked with people of all ages to create a collaborative community mural in partnership with Chroma NB, and supported by a grant from the Saint John Community Arts Board.

The mural, located at the Saint John City Market, is made up of multiple sized wooden disks decorated in a variety of art techniques. Each disk is hooked onto a metal grid panel in a way that the display can be constantly rearranged to create infinite displays symbolizing the many ways humans can love, be loved, and express their true selves beyond stereotypes of gender, race, religion, or abilities,

“I believe that every person is creative and that we all can express that creativity in many different ways,” said Crowley. “For this mural, I encouraged each person to think of their most true, authentic and fully alive version of themselves.”

Sheryl Crowley is a mosaicist and painter who delves into both the whimsical and the dark sides of life. Her work has been shown at the Saint John Arts Centre, Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre, the George Fry Gallery, Fog Forest Gallery, Handworks Gallery, Serendipin’ Art and the Art Gallery of Alberta, among others. Her mural installations adorn the walls of both the YMCA and the Imperial Theatre of Saint John.

The Artist in Residence is funded by the Saint John Community Arts Board through the City of Saint John. For more information about the program, visit: https://saintjohn.ca/en/arts-and-culture/community-arts-funding-and-artist-residence-programs
