Traffic safety improvements coming to Thorne Avenue railway crossing

Beginning Sunday, November 6, 2022, the City of Saint John will begin construction on a centre median on Thorne Avenue to improve the safety at the railway crossing located west of Bayside Drive.

The City, in partnership with New Brunswick Southern Railway and with guidance from our partners from the provincial and federal government, identified an opportunity to improve safety at the railway crossing. With an installation of a centre median, improvements will be made to the eastbound left turn lanes. The centre median will complement the existing shortened gates that prevent eastbound motorists from entering the rail crossing when a train is approaching.

The centre median will be constructed with temporary and re-useable rubber curbs, with plans to install permanent concrete curbing in the spring of 2023.

During construction, Thorne Avenue will be reduced to one lane in both directions from November 6 until November 7 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. between Egbert Street and Bayside Drive.
