Farmers’ markets are a great place to pick up some fresh produce, locally-sourced meats and seafood, international dishes, local handworks, and more. But it’s the experience of a farmers’ market that makes regular visits such a pleasure. You get to meet the producers and artisans, listen to local musicians, bump into friends, and be part of the energy that makes living in a city like Saint John so wonderful.
Saint John City Market
In the heart of uptown Saint John, the Saint John City Market is as iconic as buildings and experiences get. The oldest farmers’ market in Canada, this collection of eclectic and dynamic vendors welcome visitors from within storied walls, and under a fascinating roof—shaped like an inverted ship’s hull. Locals and visitors alike flock to the City Market—just steps from beautiful King’s Square—for local produce and seafood, international dishes, and crafts by local artists. Come to shop for dinner, or, just grab a coffee and pastry and take in the historic vibe.
Saint John Night Market
Located on South Market Street, the Saint John Night Market is an open-air market that offers a wonderful reason to enjoy your City after dark in a whole new way. Open every Thursday evening until the end of August, the Night Market offers a unique variety of food and crafts from local vendors that changes weekly.
Queen Square Farmers’ Market
Another reason living in and visiting uptown is always a dynamic experience. Nestled in historic Queen Square, the Queen Square Farmers’ Market brings the community together for healthy food, good friends, and fresh air. Local vendors set up shop every Sunday morning between May and October.
The property tax rate per $100 assessment is $1.535.

Planning to host an event in a public space in the City of Saint John? The City's Special Events Team is here to help!
Our team can help answer your questions and provide guidance about which municipal spaces are available, municipal bylaws that apply, permit requirements and event planning best practices.
All community events on municipal property require City approval to reserve the space and ensure the safety and success of all the event elements. Approval is contingent on many factors including the nature of the request, venue availability, completion and submission of all necessary event requirements. Submission of an event application constitutes a request for use of a public parks space or street closure for the purpose of an event and does not guarantee event approval.
Depending on the size and scope of your event, you may be approved as early as 2 weeks, however a minimum of 4 weeks and sometimes longer than 16 weeks may be required to review and process your application.
The City of Saint John reserves the right to revoke access and/or cancel an event up to and including the day of the event or at any time during an event.
In any modern city, libraries are much more than places to read and check out books. They’re public gathering places, city “living rooms”, egalitarian places where anyone and everyone can meet, and take advantage of the useful services the library offers.
In Saint John, the Carnegie Building became the library’s long-term permanent home from 1904 to 1983, before moving to its current location in Market Square. The Saint John Free Public Library also has two satellite branches. The West Branch, the first mall library in New Brunswick, opened in 1967 and is still at this location. The East Branch is located at the Saint John Transit building on MacDonald Road.

If you find it difficult to afford the sports, recreation, arts, or culture activity that your child or teen wants to be involved with, P.R.O. Kids (Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids) can help. P.R.O. Kids is a charitable program operated by the City of Saint John, and can pay the registration fees related to organized, registered recreation.
P.R.O. Kids helps cover the costs for sports like hockey, soccer, baseball, swimming and football. But we also work with multiple organizations who provide martial arts training, dance lessons, cheerleading, horseback riding and rock climbing, visual and creative artists, theatre arts, and music lessons.
How does it work?
CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY. It can be a sport, recreation, art, or cultural activity. There is a list of Youth Organizations on our website.
APPLY. Complete the application form. Staff will review it to verify eligibility and financial need and inform you if you are approved.
REGISTER. Once you are approved, complete the registration with the organization offering the activity. Advise them that you are supported by P.R.O. Kids.
WE PAY. P.R.O. Kids will cover all or a portion of the activity fees. PRO Kids does not reimburse applicant for expense already incurred
Administrative costs are funded by the City of Saint John, Town of Rothesay, Town of Quispamsis, and the Town of Grand Bay-Westfield. This means that 100% of funds raised through events, donations, sponsorships and grants go directly to supporting children and youth throughout Greater Saint John.
To qualify for P.R.O. Kids, your child must be between the ages of 2 and 18 years old and live in Saint John, Grand Bay-Westfield, Rothesay or Quispamsis. P.R.O. Kids provides funding that can be utilized towards registration fees for our many recognized programs.
Applicants who receive funding from P.R.O. Kids can only be in one paid recreation program at a time.

We all know that climate change poses a significant threat to the planet. As a coastal city, Saint John is particularly vulnerable, as evidenced by unpredictable weather, historic flooding, and rising sea levels. It is the responsibility of everyone—residents, officials, and government—to make every effort to live more sustainably, to minimize our environmental footprint, and use resources responsibly.
Over the years, the City of Saint John has taken action to address our demands on energy infrastructure, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support sustainability efforts. Through active transportation, waste reduction, transit expansion, green infrastructure, and care of our green spaces, we are improving quality of life, and lowering our impact on the environment that sustains us all.
For your convenience, the City of Saint John provides you with a number of options to pay your water bill.
Notice: Effective April 1, 2023, a service fee of 2.01% of the total payment will be added to each transaction by Paymentus.
Payments can be made in person at City Hall, 15 Market Square by Cash, Cheque, Debit or Credit card. Please bring a copy of you Water Bill.

The Green Machine is available each spring from May 1 - June 14. Online reservation applications open April 1.
Many communities and local organizations throughout Saint John like to host events during the warmer months to clean and beautify their neighbourhoods. The Green Machine is 14-foot trailer that contains all the equipment and supplies needed to support such clean-up initiatives in our community. And it’s available to clean-up crews free of charge. With the help of the Green Machine, residents are more easily able to take ownership of their parks and public spaces, which increases their appreciation for the natural green spaces, and fosters a sense of community pride.
- Available daily for one event only between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Requests to reserve the Green Machine for an event outside of these regular hours will be considered on a case-by-case basis as staff resources allow.)
- Please include event set-up and tear-down times in your reservation request.
- Two weeks notice is required for reservations.
- An automated response will recognize receipt of your reservation request. However, the reservation is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation from Community Services staff.
- Garbage collection is available after the clean up for non-profits or events held on municipal land. Maximum 10 garbage bags.
- The Green Machine is for community use and not intended for personal or commercial use.
- The Green Machine program does not support encampment clean-up requests, as these activities are addressed through other City services and operational processes.
