A Block Party (also known as a Play Street) is a great way to meet your neighbours, celebrate a special event in your community, and make new friends.

If your neighbourhood would like to host a Block Party Event, you can apply using the City of Saint John’s Public Space Event and Street Event booking platform (see Organize an Event on a Street).

No. You are responsible for advertising your party; however the City will issue a traffic notice about the redirection of vehicular traffic for that day.
There are a limited number of barricades, road closed, and detour signs available through the City. Please request the barricades on the application form. If the City cannot provide them, you can rent them at business in the city.
We recommend you host your party in a public space---a street or park---as it increases the shared responsibility of the event. If your block party is going to be held on public land (street, park, playground), you must apply to host your event with the City.
If your event is taking place on public land, you must complete the application form and receive approval in order to obtain a permit. The City’s Special Events Task Force will review your application and work with you to make sure your event is safe, fun, and enjoyable. The Task Force includes Police, Fire, Operations, and other service areas that you will need to work with to plan your event.
There are by-laws and other rules around the use of bouncy castles, temporary structures, fireworks, noise, alcohol, and
food.
Residents are encouraged to apply at least 16 weeks prior to your desired date.
Fireworks Display fireworks (public fireworks) and pyrotechnic special effects (sporting or other public events) are regulated by the federal government and must be:
The sale and discharge of fireworks within the City of Saint John is prohibited by Municipal By-law, C-7, except by permit issued by the Fire Chief.
The process of obtaining a permit for a Display Fireworks event in the City of Saint John starts with contacting the Fire Prevention Division of the Fire Department at (506) 658-2962 or fireprevention@saintjohn.ca.
Where the by-law permits the Fire Chief to adopt reasonable rules and regulations for the granting of permission for supervised public displays of fireworks, a competent operator is a person who holds a valid certificate to discharge Display Fireworks as issues by the Explosives Safety and Security Branch of Natural Resources Canada.
Then the permit is invalid. The review and issuance of the permit was based on a specific site of a specific date. With notice, the date can be changed, however the location cannot change without consultation and review.
If unpredictable wind direction is the issue, the ‘competent operator’ can submit two locations at the time of making application, one site being designate as the prime site (prevailing winds); the other site being designated the alternative site (non-prevailing winds).
To recognize and celebrate an inclusive Saint John, the City may fly flags on one of the Community Flag Poles at City Hall on a temporary basis to mark special and ceremonial occasions:

- Other local organizations

Requests will be confirmed on a first come, first served basis. Applications must be received at least 4 weeks in advance of the
requested date. Requests will be acknowledged, but not approved earlier than 3 months prior to the flag raising date.
Applications may be submitted up to one year prior to the date of the flag raising.
Requesting organizations may be required to supply the flag. It must be in excellent condition and conform to proper guidelines:
- Flag should be 3' x 6' (0.90m x 1.80m).
- Please ensure the flag has grommets or a rope attached.
The requestor will be provided with the location for the flag to be delivered and picked up.
If a flag raising is requested as part of a larger ceremony to be held at the City Hall and request Mayor and Council to attend, applicants are responsible for filling out the Request an Appearance by the Mayor or Councillors | City of Saint John, New Brunswick form as a separate request.
