Fireworks Display fireworks (public fireworks) and pyrotechnic special effects (sporting or other public events) are regulated by the federal government and must be:
- Approved by City of Saint John Fire Department before the event.
- Installed and discharged by a pyrotechnic special effects technician certified by Natural Resources Canada. Your pyrotechnic special effects technician or special effects company can help you with this process.
Application for permits must be made in writing at least fifteen days in advance of the date of the display. Permits for fireworks are not transferable.
Excerpt from By-law:
3(b) Except as hereinafter provided, it shall be unlawful for any person to offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail, or use or explode any fireworks; provided that the Chief of the Fire Department shall have power to adopt reasonable rules and regulations for the granting of permits for supervised public displays of fireworks by the municipality, fair associations, amusement parks and other organizations or groups of individuals. Every such display shall be handled by a competent operator approved by the chiefs of the Police and Fire Departments of the municipality, and shall be of such a character, and so located, discharged or fired as in the opinion of the Chief of the Fire Department, after proper inspection, shall not be hazardous to property or endanger any person.
