Information Session: 2026-04 Sydney Street (Broad Street to St. James Street) Water, Sanitary and Storm Renewal and Street Reconstruction

The City of Saint John will be undertaking the renewal of watermain, sanitary and storm sewers and full street reconstruction on Sydney Street between St. James Street and Broad Street in the upcoming 2026 construction season.  The purpose of this project is to renew infrastructure that is nearing the end of its useful life.

The construction activities will include:

  • Renewal of the existing watermain and sanitary sewer, installation of new storm sewer, including renewing the existing services to each building up to the property lines;
  • Full street reconstruction including new concrete curb and sidewalk, roadway gravels, asphalt, grass medians and trees and roadway signage.
  • There will be traffic disruptions during the project; however, construction crews and associated traffic controls will be present.  Partial and full street closures are expected and as much as possible, local traffic will be permitted. Signed detours will be established.

This project is part of the City’s on-going commitment to continually improve its infrastructure and is included in the City of Saint John’s approved 2024 and 2025 Water & Sewerage Utility Fund and General Fund Capital Programs.

The project is anticipated to begin in Spring 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2026.
