Rain and Wind Warning

Residents asked to take extra care due to expected heavy rainfall, and high winds

With heavy rain and high winds in the forecast for Saint John, the Saint John Emergency Management Organization (SJ-EMO) is asking residents to take extra care. The current forecast is for weather conditions to bring a significant mix of rain and high winds on Monday through to Tuesday morning.

Rainfall amounts: 30 to 50 mm, except locally near 80 mm in areas of heaviest rain. Similar storms in the past have caused: - localized flooding, especially in poor drainage areas - the overflowing of creeks and rivers - road shoulder erosion and washouts.

Very strong wind gusts that may cause damage are expected or occurring. Maximum gusts: southerly 90 - 110 km/h. Exterior seasonal decorations should be secured. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.

The City will continue to monitor updated forecasts.

The City’s Public Works and Transportation crews are prepared to respond to street flooding as needed. The SJ-EMO will monitor the weather and respond if necessary.

What you can do to help:

  1. If able, clear catch basins and gutters from any obstructions near homes.
  2. Tie down or move loose items around your property.
  3. Use caution and be safe around coastal areas.
  4. Reduce driving speeds, keep headlights on, observe all posted signage and barricades and avoid driving through any areas that are covered in water.
  5. Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit.
