COVID-19 operational changes to municipal services and facilities

The City of Saint John has implemented the following changes to municipal services and facilities following the Government of New Brunswick’s updated COVID-19 restrictions.

Community Centres

  • Both the Carleton Community Centre and the Nick Nicolle Community Centre are closed to children under the age of 12, as per the Government of New Brunswick restriction that organized sport and all other organized activities for children under 12 are prohibited.
  • For patrons 12 and over, masks are required at all times (except while drinking or eating) and physical distancing is also required.  Vaccination documentation will continue to be checked prior to entry.
  • Food security programs will continue at the entrance of the facility. Individuals without vaccination documentation will not be allowed to enter past the checkpoint.

Saint John Arenas

  • All sport and recreation activities for youth under the age of 12 are suspended until further notice.
  • All sport and recreation activities for those over the age of 12 are limited to physically distanced practices and/or skills and drills within a single team.
    • No games or competitions allowed including any events that were pre-scheduled
    • COVID-19 operational plans are required and must address physical distancing and sanitization requirements
    • Travel in and out of public health regions is not permitted for sport and recreation except for a 12 and over participant who is on a regular season team/group from a border community (not for regional/provincials or sessional skills camps)
  • Cancellations - any groups looking to cancel ice times should email Jen Reed at jen.reed@saintjohn.caGroups will not be charged for cancelling ice time while current restrictions are in place.
  • Spectators - all City arenas are at a one spectator limit per player
  • Public Skating - has been suspended
  • Birthday Party/one off bookings - have been suspended.
  • Spacing between groups - Users are to arrive no more than 15 minutes before scheduled ice time and leave immediately after (no longer than 15 minutes after their scheduled ice/arena floor time). Cooperation in respecting these time parameters is extremely important in maintaining safe traffic flow, managing the number of people inside the arena, and limiting the time groups are within the dressing rooms.
  • In the event a goalie needs extra time to get dressed, that one player, from that one team, can arrive 30 minutes earlier.
  • Warming Rooms - closed

Saint John City Market

The City Market will implement the following adjustments effective 11:59 p.m. on Friday December 17, 2021.

  • Return of directional arrows and unidirectional aisles
  • The Market atrium will continue to ask for proof of vaccination and government ID before entry is allowed
  • The Market atrium will operate at 50% seating capacity to allow for physical distancing
  • Masks will continue to be mandatory while inside the City Market

Pedways

  • To help ensure safe physical distancing is maintained, the City has implemented temporary operational changes to the pedway connections that lead to the Canada Games Aquatic Centre and TD Station. These pedways will now close 90 minutes prior to any planned event in the facilities, and remain closed until 90 minutes after the event. Temporary closures within these specific sections of the pedway will only be required when events are taking place, and will not impede access to local businesses within the pedway.
  • The City will be responsible for the closure, coordinating the placement of barriers and signage, and the monitoring for compliance.
